Did I Dial The Wrong Number?

The phone rings, and the caller asks me… “Did I dial the wrong number?” I gave the only reply I thought was appropriate.

Moments ago the phone just rang, and the caller ID showed some fairly foreign sounding name.

Me: “Hello?”
Them: “Hello?”

Me: “Yes. Hello?”
Them: “Uh, did I just dial the wrong number?”

Me: “I don’t know, that would depend if you were trying to reach me or not.”
Them: (long pause)

Them: “I think I dialed the wrong number.”
Me: “Well, thank you for calling, as I was kinda bored any how.”

Them: “Oh….” (And then she just sat there on the line saying nothing and then decided to hang up.)

Too bad, she seemed quite nice.

  1. I’ve actually had a conversation, about dialing the wrong number, with someone before. Only because they dialed my number, which was the wrong number, twice in a row.

    Some people are funny.

  2. Ever notice how if you dial a number that’s out of service, that women do as instructed and check the number and dial again.

Meanwhile, men simply press the buttons harder, convinced the phone company just routed the call improperly?

  3. How could anyone tell that they dialed the wrong number unless they know they are dialing the wrong number while dialing the number :O

  4. Nishu asks: “How could anyone tell that they dialed the wrong number…”

I suppose there are at least two ways this can happen:

    1) The person was pressing the keys and accidently slipped, and pressed two keys, or half-pressed a key which may or may not have registered, and then pressed it again. This is actually easy to do with small keypads and also with phones that don’t display the number as its dialed.

    2) The person could of had a brain fart and juxtaposition some numbers. “Hmm, was it 3 5 or 5 3….” Or, with blocks of numbers as in an office, you know your extension is x1234, and your office mate is one off… but is it one up, x1235, or one down, x1233.
